BattleRap has been a core element of hip hop since the late 1970's and came to rise in the east coast hip hop scene, sometimes in front of the crowds or via artists going back and forth with insults such as the notorious LL Cool J vs Canibus beef (1997–1998).
In 2008 Don't Flop was founded by Eurgh and Cruger who have both been involved within the industry for a number of years now. In the last 4 years Don't Flop has progressed and continues to do so, becoming the most popular league within the UK and bringing light to some very talented freestylers, battlers and artists.
Don't Flop is now a well established movement, not only do they supply us with extremely entertaining battles but they have also launched WEBHAM which focuses on the music side of the battle rappers. Don't Flop also provide a number of alternative gigs such as Don't Hog and open mic sessions for rappers to jump in! That's not forgetting their own MTV style Cribs going by the name of Don't Flop Digs.
The format of which these battles take place is usually a total of three rounds which are 60 to 90 seconds long, a coin is usually flipped on cam and whoever guesses right decides who goes first, then they begin to alternate. The battles are judged by a panel usually 3-5 Judges and they offer a breakdown as to why they thought the winner was better.
Don't Flop does not stick to the UK Rap Battle scene as occasionally Emcees from other rap battle leagues such as Grindtime, Basementalilty Battles and King Of The Dot will travel to battle within Don't Flop. The same goes for Emcees within the Don't Flop roster such as Cruger and Eurgh themselves going overseas along with other Emcees to rep their battle league and their freestyle/written abilities.
Recently Don't Flop has been trying new methods for battle rap such as a battle between two emcees (Ceezlin vs Jefferson Price) each having their own Beatboxer, at this very same event we saw our first three way battle between Bowski, Suus and Evil Eyez which was a really entertaining battle. During the Second Quarter Try-outs in Manchester we also saw a battle which featured two emcees rapping and playing guitar which is the first time ever, the battle features Tom Kane and Karl Phillips which can be watched below.
It's been a great few years for Don't Flop and for the scene in general, don't flop has seen a number of Emcee's who are extremely talented such as Verb T, Lee Scott, JollyJay, Lunar C, Matter, Oshea, Mark Grist, Blizzard, Dialect, Pamflit, Unanymous and that's only a very condensed list, not even mentioning the International Battles.
