Every once (or twice) in a generation an MC comes along that defines the era. With lyricism that's above the curve and stage presence that sets the bench mark, these micophone messengers solidify their place in hip hop history. Call them the pioneers. Call them the architects. Call them legends. Call them... Iceski and Chrome. Now take those two masters of the art of MC, stick them in a studio with one of the UK's best scratch DJs and give them a beat from Hamburg's most powerful and prolific producer and what do you have? I'll tell you - Iceski & Merlin's 'On The Attack'.
Taken from one of the year's most exciting UK releases, On The Attack featuring Chrome and DJ Tones is a funky, 'fresh as a daisy' track with bags of personality. If you're not nodding your head by the time the vocals crash in then I suspect you may have a recently precured a serious neck injury. Straight out of the B-Line Recordings camp, feature MC Chrome kicks things off and the beat strips back for him to do so with prowess. His flow is unmistakable to underground heads far and wide and taking on the duties with dedication, he lays down rhyme after rhyme of true UK wordsmithery.
Melodies meander back in and give the track a golden era feel that is so highly revered in todays hip hop community. Merlin brings sounds and samples together like a hip hop culture cupid and never seems to falter at his art. Iceski takes the mic and his furious flow and unique homegrown dialect skillfully serves up a series of serious syllables and synonyms. Every line dedicated to the culture they adore so much, On The Attack is accompanied by a hook that will bring in the catch of the day and fill the hip hop hearth with a feast for the eyes and ears. In fact, you could feed you whole family tree with this one.
Second video to accompany the EP, the visuals, created by Oliver Finch (JQ Productionz), follow Iceski and Chrome on a journey through the gritty streets of London's Southwark that's heaving with 21st century UK atmosphere. The two play with the camera as well as they do their audiences and create an optical ocean for the track to float upon.
If you've checked out Iceski & Merlin's stuff before you'll more than likely be hooked already. And if you're familiar with their full and fluid hip hop and britcore history you'll have come to expect the high standard they consistently deliver. This new release is no exception. True underground veterans, they have produced something that is testament to what the scene has achieved here in 2016. Defiantly standing on the brink of an apocalypse of media mediocrity with hip hop roots stretching deeply underground where they belong. The EP will remain on the Underground double H office playlist for a long time to come and we'll be eagerly awaiting their new audio ventures.
