One of the most impressive things about hip hop culture is just how far it has spread across the globe. And just how many deep and dark corners it has brought light to. Through ripples of music and messages the essence of what hip hop prides itself on has inspired people from every culture and background to pick up a pen, a spraycan or a mic. Or beg borrow and steal for their first set of decks. Or learn to swing and throw their body around with class on a cheap piece of vinyl flooring. A release that embodies all of this is the multi-national piece 'Dipiz World' by Broc.
As he's repping some of our favourite heads from the UK scene along with some great international artists and some boss remixes we'd like to take a few to introduce...
Broc is a french producer who also runs the brilliant radio show Wow Wax Only Wax on Radio Mille Pattes. He has collaborated previously with the likes of Black 10, Mista Bohze and NC Epik and on this new release with an array of European MCs. The album features amoung others... brand new tracks from UGHH's very own Invokal from the UK, La Recette from France, one from Ginelly & Dya Logue from Amsterdam and french MC Black 10 and capped by a b-side tune with brand new vocals from Jahman of France. There are also some brilliant remixes of tracks by Physiks, Remark and Hector Bizerck (all from Scotland), as well as cuts from DJ JumpOff and the Broc remixes of such greats as Beastie Boys, Wu Tang Clan, Poor Richeous Preachers and more.
Broc started being inspired by music by listening to The Beatles at just 8 years old. He sought out the other 'kings of rock' and as his tastes grew he simultaneously began to discover blues and reggae music. He distinctly remembers hearing James Brown for the first time and getting crazy with excitement, then one day he heard something different- Public Enemy.
"...as I was too young to know about sampling at the time, I thought they were playing with James Brown himself! I started to search out this new sound called 'hip hop', and at the same time some of the french hip hoppers started making moves. I spent hours sifting through the lyrics to my favorite tracks cause I wasn't really very good at English at the time!"
Broc started making beats at 16, after grafting all summer at a hospital job, he brought an Akai S900 and an Atari. Years later and after many collaborations both home and over here in the UK and with some updated software, Broc has compiled the best of his latest remixes with some brand new collaborations in this brilliant 'franglish' collection. With a cover drawn by Dirty Def the album shows what can be achieved when collaborating at full force!
Check out this from Broc and keep an eye out for future adventures in collaborative audio exploration.
