Hip hop has shared in a punk ethos from the early days. The DIY attitude to underground music and small batch releases lend themselves to those making music for the love from grass roots level. Most people would say punk is not a fashion or a genre but an attitude, and this release is jam packed full of it. Shouting lairy lyricism from southern shores, Brunt Poetry create a sound that is not only ferocious and forceful but is unique to them.
A Brighton based poet/rapper collaborating with a selection of live musicians forms Brunt Poetry, Rap n Roll. Newly released is the Open Mic Knight Live EP. Four tracks with a savagely satirical sound that reference and rip apart ruthlessly relevant topics for any open eyed 21st century human being.
Brunt speaks with the voice of Joe Strummer and the mind of John Cooper Clark, and his delivery has all the energy of a riot. The conversation is diverse, concise and within these four tracks manages to tackle traumas and trials of modern day homo sapiens. The wordplay and wit are solid throughout, and the puns strut with pride in their swagger. The music is catchy and has a romantic rawness that suits the visual vocals well.
Rocking, rolling and rhyming along Brunt braces the audience with bolshie, brave and sometimes brutal bursts of sound. The release has a unique performance and is proud to be something that differs from the norm. No pretensions and no posing, Open Mic Knights Live is a great example of music that could only be born on UK shores.
