When we think of hip hop, we undoubtedly think of two decks and any number of microphones. But the face of hip hop wears many guises, and as the so called 'music industry' chokes out its final breaths, and as technology becomes the ever more accessible tool of the every day Joe or Joline, the world of music has grown into the seething mass of talented musicians and vocalists we see before us. Some of my favorite live hip hop performances of the last decade have been presented with a full host of live musicians, and the result is nearly always jaw dropping. I thought I knew most of the best acts in this crazy town, and then... Along Came Shifty.
Taking a live band, splattering them with the stunning vocals of Daisy Drage and then colouring in the gaps with the two brillint MCs, Along Came Shifty have managed to create not only an impressive hip hop sound, but also something unique. Over the tracks i have heard they have proven to be brave enough to push the boundaries of what a hip hop beat can be, and the melodies and flows they utilise make the tunes almost annoyingly catchy.
Today we're looking at their latest release 'Let Me Be'. Beginning with more atmosphere than ten inhabitable planets, and with more groove than a record shop full of wax, the track gives the lyricists space to weave and wind their stories. And they do so with skill, flow, and most importantly - intelligence. Rhymers these days often fall into the trap of mistaking attitude with having something to say, not so here. The two MCs speak directly to the audience as if they were old friends, and this carries their message well. I won't ruin the ending, but it's a good story.
Musically they show diversity and dedication. Lyrically they show honesty and integrity. Together they show a whole shed load of potential. At Underground double H we'll be eagily awaiting their next outing.
