Due for release late March is something quite special. Back from touring comes Natty Speaks, the herald of the independent UK label - Defcon. Preceding this track is a video with accomplished animator supreme EzPz of Timebanditz and Wu Tang Clan collaboratory fame.
Let's start by taking apart the track. The beat (produced by Natty and Don Lawson) has bass that has grit and gravitas. It growls like a tiger in hightops. The tribal feel adds to the vibe of the lyricism, particularly in the chorus where a zombie-esq chant gives the feeling of shoppers stomping to the stores in a post-apocalyptic marching army force. The words here are chosen wisely. Verses that show how the writers have taken a serious look at our society and it's ills, and been brave enough to pass comment with vigour. Talking about bankers, borders and the barrage of social media mentalness, the MCs bring visions of a society on the precipice of a cultural war.
The video is just as defining as the track and gives much weight to the statements. EzPz has used a witty and satirical style to accompany the track well. The 'Tron' atmosphere is well cushioned by the clever points he makes with the visuals, and you find yourself glued to the screen anticipating the next change. You can tell he really understood what Natty and Mr Basista are alluding to, and the two forces combine to become one immovable object. Sitting as heavy as a shipping container full to the brim with disguarded iphones, and with a point as sharp as Stephen Fry, this is one track not to miss out on.
The single together with a D&B remix is out on the 30th March.
