Dizraeli is one of the most hard working MCs i've met in the game. Not only is there a constant flow of faultless music coming from his camp, but also his penmanship oozes on every syllable with the time he must of spent perfecting his craft. But Dizraeli has something more. The bravery to be experimental and push boundaries with his chosen artform. That is no better summed up than with Dizraeli And The Small Gods. Taking a full live band with some of the most talented musicians in their field, including Bellatrix - double bassist and three times world female beat boxing champion, plus furious fingered DJ Downlow, and then blending that seeminlgy effortlessly with Dizraeli's unique 'folk hop' poetic delivery. The end result not only works, but creates something that even upon first listening, you can tell is very special. Dizraeli as a solo artist, and with The Small Gods has a plethora of outstanding music videos, as well as some albums, EPs and previous singles all well worth seeking out. Dizraeli also performs as a spoken word artist, if you ever get the chance to see him, we highly recommend.
Today we are looking at the brand new release - The Depths. Coming from the director/producer combo of David Higgs (http://www.davidhiggsfilm.com/) and Daisy Costello, this is not just a music video, this is a crisp and emotive mini movie. Powerful from the get-go with its 'rabbit in the headlights' opening scenes, The Depths goes on to tell the story of homophobia, using Dizraeli's evil rabbit character creation that has featured in many of their recent videos. A sneaky glance at a rainbow decorated Putin solidifies their stance, and Dizraeli's on point rhyming sequences throw up the prejudices and fears that people face. The imagery and atmosphere created here visually are nothing short of phenomenal.
We don't need to tell you that homophobia unfortunately has been rife in hip hop since the days of its conception. As is with life, there will be prejudice where there is fear, ignorance and mis-understanding. That is what this video sets out to address. Saying Dizraeli is brave for speaking up about this subject within a scene like hip hop would be belittling the message, but he represents many who feel the same way, and a growing youth that have no time for such nonsense as racism or homophobia. Hip hop culture in all its guises started out as a way to bring people together to create something positive out of poverty, prejudice and discontent. Artists like Dizraeli And The Small Gods who're brave enough to carry on that ethos no matter what the boundaries should have our upmost respect. Anyway, sod all that- its a bloody great tune! A deep and moody beat with a haunting chorus vocal from Bellatrix and an evil little piano hook that rears its cheeky grin throughout. The music is original, ridiculously well produced and very much home grown. Complimented by the cinematography and released with a message, I couldn't ask for any more of hip hop. We prayed to the small gods and they brought us a banging new release...
