Fliptrix Polyhymnia Album Review

Fliptrix is a household name in the scene having built one of the most independent successful labels we've seen thus far (High Focus), while building his own career, super groups and supporting countless heads in the process! As each year fades away Fliptrix graces us with a solo release and we're now in the final phase of waiting for his 5th studio album titled "Polyhymnia" produced by Molotov featuring 14 tracks set to drop on 08/10/14. If you're a long time listener you can probably assume what context and rhymes Fliptrix is going to bring with this album, however being titled Polyhymnia after a Greek goddess known for her sacred poetry, hymns, dancing, eloquence and meditation - we can only assume Fliptrix is back with a big bag of vibes, progression, food for thought and so much more so let's jump into our review!

Polyhymnia kicks off with Jeheeze produced by Molotov completely packed with hard hitting snares and drums solidifying Fliptrix's platform to ride the melodies with uplifting progressive rhymes, this is an absolute bar fest in which Fliptrixs goes through the reasons why he's a microphone controller - plain and simple. JEHEEZE!! Praise the Sun features one of HF's most exciting signees Rag N Bone Man to bring his soulful voice to the hook, while Fliptrix proceeds to trickle words of wisdom on Solar deity’s and why the sun should be regarded as a god! An official video was also released for Praise The Sun by Sam Cox, consisting of 1,800 hand drawn images resulting in a 3 and a half minute video which took over 2,000 hours to create (madness!), hit play below to see the masterpiece!

Fliptrix | Praise The Sun FT Rag N Bone Man

Polyhymnia is one of the deepest tracks on the album and certainly one of our favourites, Fliptrix delves into an eerie beat by Molotov to describe his unconditional love for his woman which just so happens to actually be Music (clues in the album/track name). Fliptrix displays his in depth pen game and complex writing style on this track flawlessly, encapsulating the listener with every rhyme spoke, one of his best tracks ever. Here Today, Gone Tomorrow will have you bouncing off the walls with uplifting vibes and progressive rhymes, going through the high's and low's and ultimately rising above it cause we all have an expiry date, so enjoy yourself! Another don video by Fliptrix & High Focus so light a zuggy and kick back.

Fliptrix | Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

Track 5 Lean Star Gazer oozes tranquility and consciousness from the beat to the rhymes it's concocted with food for thought content while Fliptrix goes through life changes, touching on oppression through media/technology and emotions from life to death - It's a classic Fliptrix track that'll have you sitting back and reflecting. Alchemical Vessel features a verse from the legendary Chester P (Taskforce) alongside Fliptrix, both bringing their rhymes to the fore front, covering a mass amount of subjects it's easier to say this track is everything you'd expect it to be.

Back with another banger The Warning was released in February under a HFTV exclusive bars session (video below) - however it's slightly different as the album version is much slower allowing you to digest every gem of knowledge Fliptrix drops, gunning for the modern way of life, living in slum, our instinct to monopolize and much more! Check out the HFTV bars video below, cop the album to get the other version!

What's that? Another official video? Yep! Track 8 is titled Vultures and is one of the liveliest tracks on the album, bringing the message of the underground to the forefront of the mainstream media! Setting the tone for the future, it's all been on our mind the last few years and it's becoming to take place, the death of the mainstream while the underground storms through! Hit play below now and jack your volume up, let's spread the word.

Fliptrix | Vultures

Next track "Reflections" features the rest of The Four Owls crew (Leaf Dog, Verb T & BVA) all bringing their own infinite drops of wisdom! Going through scenarios of wasting time, humbling yourself, actions that lead to rapping, regaining your feet before running the marathon and so on! It's a classic head nodder and everything you expect from The Four Owls, its got me hyped for their second debut album! Wavey keeps the vibes going with funky production, versatile flows and a hook you're gonna have a hard time not joining in with!

Highway Traveler is a track that Fliptrix really gets busy with; it oozes an intense amount of self-reflection/consciousness and really showcases why Fliptrix is at the forefront of the scene. You won't find anyone else able to carry this subject matter through without filling you with disbelief or forcing the rhymes.

Fliptrix - Highway Traveler
  • Reflecting is a thing we need to do more
  • Meditate and get away from sitting at a keyboard
  • Dead the ego off & write a rhyme, then push record
  • I do some art and be creative, I believe that's what we're here for

Second to last full track The Message shows exactly what Molotov can do with the production skills, creating a timeless beat that compliments Fliptrixs style to a T, these two work exceptionally well with each other throughout the album, but this track takes the cake for us! We won't say anymore, you're experience this on 08/10/14. So, after hundreds of words we're on the last full track Going To The Moon in which you embark on a journey to the moon, reflecting on the earth from above to essentially make the point of, on earth were separated with our individual issues but from above, we're all one... let's demonstrate it. Fliptrix closes off the album with a skit/quote from Terence McKenna on the last track Reclaim Your Mind wrapping up the entire albums subject matter with an intense closer, we're big fans of Terences work so it's a flawless ending for us!

We hope you've enjoyed our review and are already awaiting your copy of Fliptrixs – Polyhymnia album, if you’re not then it’s time to get in check and grab yourself a Vinyl or CD to get it in time for the official release (08/10/14)! We can promise any avid hip hop fan who likes quality subject matter and thought provoking rhymes you’ll be far from disappointed and hooked by Fliptrixs presence and Molotov’s golden ear for production. The Vinyl version of Polyhymnia costs £17.99 and the CD version only £8.99, including a fantastically designed case (inside & outside) + a 16 page lyric book, it’s clearly worth the price tag!
