We've got a special exception today, we're primarily UK Hip Hop based however Beat Basement Records hit me up regarding some Australian heads signed to their label and after a quick listen through decided these heads are without a doubt worth breaking the rules for. The release is titled 'Fire In The Basement' EP by emcee Context and beat-smith Jimmy Flipshyt, together they conjure up hip hop with the vibes of the 90's, thought provoking rhymes and production that'll get your neck snappin' with ease! We're gonna give these guys a full length review so hit play on their bandcamp plugin below while you read our thoughts!
The first track which kicks off the EP is titled Fire In The Basement featuring Context riding Jimmy Flipshyts beat on his ones, the beat features some short cuts easing you into the smooth tranquil piano loops! Context tackles the beat with his signature delivery and rhyme style, lacing it with rhymes that'll quickly get you acquainted with the levels they're bringing to their own hip hop scene but also the scene as a whole. An official video is dropping for this track on the weekend so stay tuned for that!
Just Listen features Context alongside two other emcees Mattrix & Stateovmind creating a lyrical whirlwind, bombarding you with hard hitting bars, quick witted flows and a beat that brings the hyped atmosphere to the forefront of the track! Perfect track for a Friday after you clock out of the mundane 9-5! Mirror Mirror takes this EP from strength to strength with funkalicious production from Jimmy Flipshyt yet again (This dude, jeeeez!), Context and emcee P.Smurf engulf the beat with bars exposing the narcissistic values which seem to run society without forcing their rhymes, making this track is thoroughly enjoyable from the get go! Normal Life is track number 4 and is one of our favorites from the Fire In The Basement EP, you can expect some stella production from Jimmy and Context lay down thought provoking subject matter, revisiting parts of his youth, the journey from boy to man and the progression of himself/his music! Highly relatable.
Jump does exactly what the title says, spewing uplifting vibes and rhymes that glide effortlessly across the beat, a hook that'll get you reciting and bobbin around! Context displays his versatility with all the elements of hip hop, solidifying yet another banging track on the EP! Incomparable includes two features, first up is BVA from High Focus Records and fellow Aussie Sinks! Unfortunately sometimes you might get over shined on your own track alongside someone like BVA however that's certainly not the case here, the emcees bounce off each other with ease completely complimenting each others styles! Another big track. Skipping track 7 titled Snakes (no reason, just experience that yourself!) we land on the second to last track on the EP titled Have You Heard? which is currently my favorite track on the EP. Have You Heard? features an assortment of rhymes that'll engage your brain on a food for tip, going through an array of issues with what's wrong with the world while still keeping that uplifting and progressive vibe theme running throughout the Fire In The Basement EP!
