Using spoken wordsmithery to tell tales of concrete culture. Adapting to poetry & hip hop alike, yet ignoring the exclusiveness of either, Invokal plays with rhythmic syllable placement & rhyme to construct his own original brand of wordsmithery.
Invokal started out his musical career as a frontman for rock, punk and metal bands. He graced stages with various acts, supporting the likes of One Minute Silence and Hundred Reasons. His band Entropy took the best sounds of metal music at the time and collaborated them with Invokal's fiery punk style. After moving down south to follow his lyrical path, he became entrenched in the spoken word and live hip hop scenes, flourishing in the local circuit. Developing his style of delivery and passion for meaningful sentiments in his wordplay, Invokal became a regular at Hammer And Tongue (the South's premier Spoken Word and Poetry Slam), performing with the likes of Spliff Richard and Kate Tempest. There were many other nights supporting up and coming talent. Celebrating this, Invokal organised and hosted The Anti-Pop Idol Open Mic Competition, scouting out such wonderful local acts as Dizraeli, Samsara, as well as King Porter Stomp and The Glass Band who both went on to win the final. The Anti-Pop naturally progressed into a radio show on Radio Reverb (Brighton's Community Radio station). A show where unsigned local acts performed live to the city, and discussed their tastes and influences. During this time Invokal's own band made head-way on the circuit. Plantin' Seeds infused hip hop with funk, jazz and more all played by live musicians. Sharing stages with the likes of Monkey Sons, Transformer, Steve And The Ghost and many more.
Sometime in 2010, Invokal made contact with the britcore scene. His work with Hamburg producer Merlin, gave him the space to take a new direction with his work. Combining what he had learnt from the various scenes Invokal had found success in, he experimented over many styles and tempos, finding his own unique stance on the world of hip hop. Working with an ever growing wealth of producers, Invokal has released tracks galore, and in 2012 released his debut album with Merlin, under the guise The Magik Word. 2 years on and after building a back catalog to be proud of, Invokal is riding the crest of his new EP 'Music From The Matchbox Mansion'. He has been printed to wax on collaboration tracks with crews 32 Troop and Planet Of The Fakes, plus DJ Highfly's 26 MC/22 minute track Rohstoff. He has released singles with Mr. Simmonds, Asbest & The Paragraph Pirates, SystemATA and more, and is still hard at it in the studio. Due to release more music and videos with Forzin Valves, his 2nd full album Broken Author (produced by DJ Tones), Protean (produced by Dirty Showbiz working with Inzaine and Mr. Morph), Biros And Bones working with Sire, Guy And His Often Spectacular Orchestra, Left Arm Pregnant, Spatts (The Criminal Minds) plus more from The Magik Word.
