Artist Database: C > Confucius MC Lyrics
South London’s Confucius MC is a unique voice, rising above the noise and cutting through the clichéd conversations. The son of a Irish/British teacher and a Grenadian musician, the young Con fell upon the teachings of his namesake - the Chinese philosopher Confucius - after becoming enamoured with the movies of Bruce Lee,Jackie Chan and the like.
After buying Wu Tang Clan’s iconic ’36 Chambers’ album with his high school work experience money the seed was planted. But it wasn’t until he heard A Tribe Called Quest’s Dilla-produced ‘Beats, Rhymes & Life’ that his own unique brand of lyricism began to blossom.
As one half of live duo =CoN+KwAkE= Con has opened up for the likes of Mos Def and Slum Village; the MC/drummer tag-team’s unique stage show spawning a formula that Kwake has since masterfully translated to his backing of MC’s like Jehst, Dels and the mighty DOOM. A low-key presence within musical circles, Con has performed and worked with the likes of Eric Lau, Speakers Corner Quartet, Hejira and Micachu & The Shapes over the course of his musical development.
In his day job Con puts his philosophical outlook to good use, running creative writing workshops for young people in his community. He has also been developing his own play ‘The Panopticon’, leading a one-off scratch performance at the prestigious Battersea Arts Centre in Spring 2013.
